CANCELED-LFHM: Modeling and control problems in closed loop neuroprosthetic systems

Brain Machine Interfaces (BMIs) establish direct communication between living brain tissue and external devices such as computers, robots and artificial limbs. By sensing and decoding neuronal activity to actuate external devices, BMI-based neuroprostheses hold great promise for rehabilitating motor disabled subjects such as amputees. However, lack of adequate sensory feedback, and in some cases, presence of limited but confounding sensory feedback, and lack of rigorous theory for analyzing closed-loop BMIs, has greatly limited their widespread clinical deployment in rehabilitation. In this seminar, we will present our results on dynamic modelling of the closed-loop neuroprosthetic system and the formulation of an analytical framework for studying the impact of sensory feedback on closed-loop performance.
